Digital Meeting on Conversation Analysis (DMCA 2022) Special Issue

Welcome to this special issue of the ISCA Publications Committee newsletter, featuring a collection of reports from speakers, workshop facilitators, organisers, and participants who took part in the Digital Meeting for Conversation Analysis (DMCA) conference held between October 31 to November 4, 2022. As excitement builds for ISCA’s major in-person conference ICCA 2023 in Brisbane, we thought it would be a good time to reflect on challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned from our online conference last year.

First, a little outline of how the conference worked – for those who might have missed it:

The DMCA conference aimed to be a landmark event that brought together a diverse group of researchers from around the world to share their latest findings and insights on various aspects of conversation analysis. With a focus on fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing between early career researchers and experienced scholars, the DMCA conference offered a platform for participants to engage in a range of activities, including keynote talks, paper presentations, and interactive workshops, among others. To accommodate a huge range of time zones, the conference was organised into two streams: one for the EMCA community in Oceania and East Asia, and one for the Americas, Europe, and Africa. As you will read in the testimonials collected in this issue it was a resounding success, with participants praising the high-quality presentations and the opportunity to network with colleagues from different countries and disciplines.

In this special issue, colleagues offer unique perspectives on the DMCA experience. From speakers and workshop facilitators, to organisers and attendees, each testimonial sheds light on different aspects of the event and the ways in which it impacted their research and professional development. With contributions from a diverse range of voices, from early-career to seasoned researchers, this issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the conference that showcases the kinds of knowledge and experiences that were shared during the event. Whether you’re an early career researcher or an established scholar, we hope that these testimonials will inspire and inform your work in EMCA, and get people excited for more sharing at ICCA2023!

DMCA: the organizing committee perspective

The first discussions of a global, fully online EMCAIL conference began in the fall of 2020; at this moment in time, we had grown accustomed to living in lockdowns, to travel restrictions, and to having in-person events canceled for the foreseeable future. Although early 2021 brought with it the promise of vaccines that could curb the spread of COVID-19 and allow us to return to some sense of normality, large, in-person events of any kind were still very much out of the question. Read this post written by Sam Schirm.

DMCA from the participants’ perspective

After a few months from the DMCA22 conference, attendees still talk about it. It was, after all, the first all-inclusive conference, designed to be online, to be global, to be diverse and open in the field of Interactional Linguistics, Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis (ILEMCA). Attendees were not only given platform to present their research contributions, but were also presented with valuable training opportunities; these ranged workshops and keynotes on current research areas in ILEMCA to events on the practical and broader matters of grant writing, publishing in, connecting, and surviving academia. ‘A Life in CA’ State of Talk Podcast Live with Bogdana Huma, Elizabeth Couper-Kuhlen and Chase Raymond

This episode was recorded as part of the “Life in CA” plenary at the Digital Meeting on Conversation Analysis in November 2022. These ranged from career-focused requests for advice from early-career researchers to broad inquiries about the future of EM/CA and key questions for the field in the next decade. Listen here…

Conference CFP: Comparative Perspectives on Doctor-Patient Interactions (CDPI) (Deadline: 31st May)

Dear colleagues, our Research Group Linkage funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), Germany, is researching the interactive dynamics and contexts of Doctor-Patient-Encounters in Western and Peripheral clinical settings. In this context, we are organising a virtual conference tagged “Comparative Perspectives on Doctor-Patient Interactions” (CDPI), and we would very much like to invite contributions from across the world. The hybrid conference takes a comparative perspective on doctor-patient interactions within Medical Conversation Analysis, Discourse Analysis, Linguistic Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, Corpus Linguistics and Health Communication (please see the attached Call).

We hope to receive many exciting contributions, hopefully including yours!
