Dear EMCA/AI network members,
Hereby a reminder for our meeting next week, Friday October 31st from 12.30-14.00 CET.
Meeting link: https://liu-se.zoom.us/j/67554855790
This will be a reading session addressing the topic of simulation. Our main reading will be Lecture 32 by Sacks.
This lecture concerns the notion of imitation, touching on what it means for behavior to be treated as an imitation rather than the ‘real’ thing.
The lecture came up last meeting in relation to Wizard of Oz data but it also holds relevant points for artificial agents in general.
Please find it attached, it is a very short (4 pages) and interesting read.
Three recent papers might furthermore be relevant to browse as background readings. Two of these concern empirical work on Wizard of Oz:
Porcheron, M., Fischer, J. E., & Reeves, S. (2021). Pulling back the curtain on the wizards of Oz. Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, 4(CSCW3), 1-22.

Pelikan, H. R., Bu, F., & Ju, W. (2025, April). The People Behind the Robots: How Wizards Wrangle Robots in Public Deployments. In Proceedings of the 2025 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (pp. 1-21).
https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3706598.3713237
And one theoretical paper that could be useful to our discussion in some respects:
Clark, H. H., & Fischer, K. (2023). Social robots as depictions of social agents. Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 46, e21.
https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/F5CB476CCC6A1BF375489045F4BED200/S0140525X22000668a.pdf/div-class-title-social-robots-as-depictions-of-social-agents-div.pdf
These background readings are (as the name implies) not meant as the central readings of this session, so please read them only to the extent fitting your time and interest.
We hope to see you next week!
Best wishes,
Hannah and Lynn
