Dear EMCA/AI network members,
Our last meeting before summer break will be on Friday, May 24, 12.30-14.00 CET.
Zoom Link: https://liu-se.zoom.us/j/69884330110
Damien and Mathias thought out a wonderful subject for a discussion session, namely divergent assumptions as to what "interaction" is in "human-machine interaction"
The idea is to discuss assumptions in HRI/HCI about "interactions" involving robots or artificial agents.
What do we (EMCA researchers, non-EMCA-oriented HRI researchers, engineers, designers, tech companies' employees, etc.) respectively index when we formulate phrases such as “conversing with a robot”, “interacting with a vocal agent”, etc.? Are there diverging (un)acknowledged assumptions about these phenomena in HRI/HCI research or in the industry (e.g., regarding action/agency/recipiency)?
We invite you to bring any data that could highlight specific assumptions about "human-machine interaction” that you would like to discuss and present: your favorite HRI/HCI/design paper, a commercial robot’s technical documentation that describes what a “human-robot interaction” is or should be, design documents, quotes from industry professionals, ethnographic observations, etc.
Appreciating that many perspectives in HRI/HCI will be distinct from EM/CA starting points, we want to focus on what we can learn from understanding these divergent perspectives - can we, for example, try to ‘steelman’<https://constantrenewal.com/steel-man> characterizations that diverge from our own (noting of course that ‘our own’ might also not be a monolith)?
Looking forward to seeing you!
Kind regards,
Lynn, Hannah and Saul
